How to choose a vacuum pump oil.
Vacuum pump oil seals and lubricates rotary vane and piston vacuum pumps and must have a low vapour pressure, so the oil itself does not limit the vacuum the pump can reach. It also needs to resist oxidation, because the pump runs hot, and to tolerate whatever vapour the pump draws in.

Picking the right grade
- Vacuum level
- Fine and high vacuum pumps need an oil with a narrow boiling range and low vapour pressure, such as Castrol Aircol HV 100. General rough-vacuum pumps can run on a VDL compressor oil of the viscosity the pump maker gives.
- What the pump draws in
- Acidic, corrosive or solvent vapours need a resistant oil. The TotalEnergies PV SH 100 grade is listed for acid and corrosive vapour extraction.
- Food and packaging
- Vacuum packaging lines and milking machines specify an NSF H1 oil, such as Castrol Optileb V or FUCHS AGRIFARM Milking Machine Oil.
