How to choose a wire rope lubricant.
Wire rope lubricant protects the strands and core of steel ropes on cranes, hoists, winches, draglines, lifts and ship deck machinery. It has to penetrate between the strands, stay there while the rope bends over sheaves, and keep water and dust out, because a rope fails from corrosion and wear inside, where it cannot be seen.

Picking the right grade
- Penetrating or coating
- A thin penetrating dressing reaches the core and is used during service lubrication of running ropes. A heavier coating grease seals the outside against water and is used on standing ropes and ropes exposed to weather.
- Application
- Pressure lubricators need a pumpable grade; manual brush and spray application take an adhesive oil or spray. Choose a product made for the method you use.
- Lifts
- Lift and elevator ropes need a lubricant that does not reduce traction on the sheave; Castrol Tribol WR 4600 is made for building lift cables.
- Dust and heat
- Cement plant and mine ropes run in abrasive dust; choose an adhesive grease that does not pick up grit, such as the Ceran AD grades.
