How to choose a paper machine oil.
Paper machine oil feeds the dryer section bearings, felt rolls and gears of a paper or board machine from a central circulating system. It works wet and hot, so it must shed water fast, resist oxidation, carry EP additives for the gearboxes on the same system and keep bearings free of deposits over a long run.

Picking the right grade
- Viscosity
- ISO VG 150 to 320 is usual for dryer section circulating systems. The machine maker's lubrication chart gives the grade for each system.
- Mineral or synthetic
- Synthetic PAO grades run cleaner and last longer in the hottest dryer sections; mineral grades remain the economical choice for cooler sections.
- Approvals
- Paper machine makers such as Valmet and Voith list approved oils. Tell us the machine and section and we will quote an approved grade.
