How to choose a vacuum & clean-room lubricant.
Lubricants for vacuum chambers, semiconductor tools, clean rooms and space mechanisms must not outgas, must not contaminate wafers or optics, and must keep working where there is no air to carry heat away or re-form an oxide layer. Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) and specially refined synthetic hydrocarbon greases and oils with very low vapour pressure are used, tested to ASTM E595 for outgassing.

Picking the right grade
- Vacuum level
- High and ultra-high vacuum need PFPE greases and oils with the lowest vapour pressure; the NyeTorr range covers these. Rough vacuum can use low-outgassing hydrocarbon greases.
- Contamination
- Clean-room and wafer-handling equipment needs a lubricant that does not migrate or shed particles; Nyeclean grades are made for this.
- Chemical exposure
- PFPE lubricants resist reactive gases and plasma in semiconductor process chambers, where hydrocarbons would degrade.
- Pump oils
