How to choose a chain oil.

Chain oil lubricates the pins and bushes inside a roller or conveyor chain, which is where a chain wears. It has to creep into the joint, stay there without being flung off, and not leave residue where the chain runs through an oven, a dryer or a paint line. Products range from adhesive mineral oils for drive chains to synthetic ester and polyglycol oils for chains at 250 °C and above.

Picking the right grade

Temperature
Below 100 °C an adhesive mineral or semi-synthetic chain oil serves. From 100 to 250 °C choose a synthetic ester oil that does not leave carbon. Above 250 °C, polyglycol or specialised ester grades such as Castrol Viscogen KLK and LUBRILOG Estar are made to evaporate cleanly.
Speed and load
Fast chains need a thin oil that penetrates; slow, heavily loaded chains need a heavier adhesive oil, such as RIVOLTA S.K.D. 2000 or 3000.
Application
Spray cans suit manual lubrication; central and drip systems need a pumpable viscosity; oven chains are often lubricated by automatic brush or spray units matched to the oil.
Food and wet areas
Chains on food lines take an NSF H1 chain oil. Chains washed with water need a water-resistant adhesive grade.
