How to choose a transformer oil.
Transformer oil insulates and cools the windings of power and distribution transformers, circuit breakers and switchgear. It is specified to IEC 60296 for mineral oils and IEC 62770 for natural esters, and judged on breakdown voltage, dissipation factor, oxidation stability and water content. Inhibited oils carry an antioxidant and last longer; uninhibited oils are specified by some utilities.

Picking the right grade
- Inhibited or uninhibited
- Inhibited oils (IEC 60296 type I) resist oxidation longer and are the usual choice for new transformers. Uninhibited oils are used where the utility or transformer maker specifies them.
- Mineral or ester
- Natural and synthetic esters, such as Isovoltine Bio and Bio VE, have a much higher fire point and are biodegradable, which is why they are chosen for transformers in buildings, near water and in fire-sensitive sites.
- Cold climates and high loads
- Low-viscosity, low-pour-point grades such as Shell Diala S5 BD are made for cold starts and high loading; in the Gulf the usual concern is oxidation at high ambient temperature.
- Testing
- Oil arrives with a certificate of analysis. Transformer oil is tested after filling and on a schedule for breakdown voltage, water and acidity.
