How to choose a turbine oil.
Turbine oil lubricates the bearings and governor hydraulics of steam, gas and hydro turbines and the compressors driven by them. It runs for years, not months, so it is judged on oxidation stability, water separation, air release and resistance to varnish. The specifications are DIN 51515, ISO 8068 and the turbine makers' own, such as GE GEK 32568 and Siemens TLV 9013 04.

Picking the right grade
- ISO VG 32 or 46
- VG 32 is the usual grade for steam and gas turbines with pressurised bearings; VG 46 is specified for some gas turbines, geared units and hot climates. Follow the turbine maker's manual.
- Gas turbines
- Heavy-duty gas turbines run their bearings hotter and need an oil with the maker's approval and high varnish resistance; several of the Mobil DTE 700 and 800 and Shell Turbo grades carry these approvals.
- Geared turbines and EP
- Where the turbine drives a reduction gear, the maker may call for a turbine oil with mild EP additives (ISO L-TGE), such as ADNOC G II Turbine Oil EP.
- Analysis
- Turbine oil charges are large and expensive. Regular analysis for acid number, varnish potential and water keeps the charge in service and the plant running.
