How to choose a gas engine oil.
Gas engine oil lubricates stationary engines running on natural gas, LPG, biogas or landfill gas in power generation, cogeneration (CHP) plants and gas compression. Gas burns hotter and cleaner than diesel, so the oil must resist oxidation and nitration and leave little ash on the valves and spark plugs. The engine makers, Caterpillar, Jenbacher, MWM, Wärtsilä, MAN and Cummins, each approve specific oils.

Picking the right grade
- Ash level
- Low-ash oils (around 0.5 per cent sulphated ash) suit natural gas engines with catalysts. Medium-ash oils are chosen for engines on fuels with sulphur or siloxanes, such as biogas and landfill gas, where the extra ash neutralises acids.
- Fuel quality
- Landfill and sewage gas carry sulphur, chlorine and siloxanes that attack the oil. Grades made for these fuels, with higher base number, are listed below. Tell us the fuel analysis.
- The engine maker's approval
- Jenbacher, Caterpillar, MWM and Wärtsilä publish approved lists and oil change intervals tied to them. Using an approved oil keeps the warranty and the drain interval.
- Viscosity
- SAE 40 monograde is the standard for most stationary gas engines; 15W-40 is used on some smaller units and in cold starting.
