How to choose a slideway oil.

Slideway oil lubricates the bed ways, guides and tables of lathes, milling machines, grinders and machining centres. Its job is to stop stick-slip, the jerky movement of a heavy table starting from rest, so the machine can position accurately at low feed rates. It is tacky enough to stay on vertical ways and is formulated to separate from water-soluble coolant that washes over it, so the coolant sump does not fill with oil. The specification is DIN 51502 CGLP, in ISO VG 32, 68 and 220.

Picking the right grade

Viscosity: ISO VG 68 is the standard grade for horizontal and most vertical ways on modern machine tools. VG 220 is specified for heavy machines, vertical ways carrying heavy loads, and slow feeds. VG 32 is used where the maker specifies a combined slideway and hydraulic oil.
Coolant compatibility: On machines that use a water-miscible cutting fluid, choose a slideway oil that separates cleanly from the emulsion, such as the RENEP CGLP grades or Shell Tonna S3 M. Tramp oil that emulsifies into the coolant shortens its life.
Combined slideway and hydraulic duty: Some machines feed the ways from the hydraulic system. The RENEP CGLP 68 and Castrol Magna SW 32 grades are listed as suitable for both.
The machine maker's chart: Most machine tool makers specify a slideway oil by viscosity and the ISO L-G or DIN CGLP class. Match that; a hydraulic oil on the ways will give stick-slip.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between slideway oil and hydraulic oil?

Slideway oil contains tackiness and friction-modifying additives that stop stick-slip on the sliding ways of a machine tool and help it separate from coolant. Hydraulic oil has anti-wear additives for pumps but gives jerky motion on ways. Some grades are approved for both duties; otherwise use each where the machine maker specifies it.

Which slideway oil is equivalent to Mobil Vactra No. 2?

Vactra No. 2 is an ISO VG 68 slideway oil. The ISO VG 68 grades from FUCHS RENEP, Shell Tonna and Castrol in the table below are the same type and viscosity. Send us your machine and coolant and we will confirm the equivalent.
