How to choose a rust preventive & corrosion protection.

Rust preventives protect machined parts, steel stock, tools, moulds and equipment between operations, in storage and during shipping. They range from thin dewatering fluids that displace water after machining and give weeks of indoor protection, to oils and waxy films that protect for months or years outdoors, and VCI (vapour phase) oils for enclosed spaces. The thickness of the film sets how long the protection lasts and how it is removed.

Picking the right grade

Protection period: Short-term indoor protection between operations takes a dewatering or thin oily film. Export and long outdoor storage take a waxy or solvent-based film. Match the product to the months of protection you need.
Removal: A thin film can often be left on or removed by the next process. Waxy films need a solvent or alkaline cleaner before assembly or coating. Plan the cleaner with the preventive.
Water-based or solvent: Water-miscible preventives, such as the Rustilo Aqua grades, suit parts leaving a wash line. Solvent-based films dry faster and protect longer.
Enclosed spaces: VCI grades protect the inside of gearboxes, pipes and packaged machines by vapour, where a film cannot be applied.
