How to choose a spindle oil.
Spindle oil is a very low viscosity oil, ISO VG 2 to 22, for the high-speed spindle bearings of machine tools, textile machinery and grinders. At those speeds a thicker oil would generate heat rather than remove it, so the oil is thin, clean and oxidation-stable, and often circulates through a cooling unit.

Picking the right grade
- Viscosity
- The spindle maker's manual gives the grade. VG 2 and 3 serve the highest speeds; VG 10 is common for grinding and machine tool spindles; VG 22 covers slower spindles and some lathe headstocks.
- Oil-air and oil-mist systems
- Spindles lubricated by oil-air or oil-mist systems need the grade the system maker specifies, which is usually a VG 22 to 68 oil rather than a thin spindle oil.
- Spindle coolant
- Water-based spindle coolants, such as Castrol Hyspin Spindle Coolant SF, circulate through the spindle cooling jacket and are a different product from the bearing oil.
