Can I use hydraulic oil in an air compressor?

Not for long. Compressor oil is formulated to resist oxidation in hot, air-rich conditions and to avoid varnish and carbon. A hydraulic oil oxidises faster and shortens the life of the separator and the oil.

How often should compressor oil be changed?

Mineral oils every 2,000 to 4,000 hours, synthetic oils 6,000 to 8,000 hours or more, depending on the compressor and the ambient temperature. Oil analysis extends the interval safely.

Which oil for an Atlas Copco or Ingersoll Rand compressor?

An ISO VG 46 synthetic or semi-synthetic rotary compressor oil is usual; send us the model and we will quote the grade that matches the maker's specification.

How to choose a compressor oil.

Compressor oil lubricates and cools the rotors or pistons of an air compressor and seals the compression chamber. It runs hot and in contact with air, so oxidation stability is what separates a 2,000-hour oil from an 8,000-hour one. Grades are specified to DIN 51506 VDL and ISO 6743-3, with ISO VG 46 and 68 the common viscosities for rotary screw compressors.

Picking the right grade

Rotary screw or reciprocating: Screw and vane compressors take an ISO VG 32, 46 or 68 oil with high oxidation stability. Reciprocating (piston) compressors take a VDL oil, often VG 100 or 150, that resists carbon build-up on valves.
Mineral, semi or full synthetic: Mineral oils give 2,000 to 4,000 hours in most screw compressors. Semi-synthetic grades roughly double that. Full synthetic PAO or ester oils reach 8,000 hours and more and suit the high discharge temperatures of Gulf summers.
The compressor maker's oil: Many OEM oils are made by the brands we supply. Tell us the compressor model and the oil it uses today and we will quote the equivalent grade with its service life.
Gas and process compressors: Compressors handling hydrocarbon gas, ammonia or other process gases take a dedicated oil, such as Castrol Aircol PG. Ask for the gas and we will quote accordingly.
