What is an HFC hydraulic fluid?

A water-glycol fluid containing around 35 to 45 per cent water. The water makes it fire resistant: if it hits a hot surface it turns to steam rather than burning. HFC fluids are used in die casting, steel plant and mining.

Can a fire-resistant fluid replace mineral hydraulic oil directly?

Not without preparation. The system must be drained and flushed, seal and hose materials checked, and pump ratings confirmed for the new fluid. We can supply the maker's changeover guidance with the quotation.

How to choose a fire-resistant hydraulic fluid.

A fire-resistant hydraulic fluid is used where a hydraulic leak could reach molten metal, a furnace, hot slag or an ignition source: steel mills, die-casting cells, forging presses, foundries and underground mining. The ISO 6743-4 classes are HFA and HFB (water-based emulsions), HFC (water glycol) and HFDU (synthetic esters without water).

Picking the right grade

HFC water glycol: The common choice for die casting and steel plant up to around 200 bar. The water content gives the fire resistance, so the fluid needs its water level checked and topped up, and pumps are usually derated.
HFDU synthetic ester: Water-free, so it works at higher pressures and temperatures and with standard pumps, and it is usually biodegradable. It costs more and needs compatible seals and paints.
Changing over: Switching from mineral oil to HFC or HFDU needs the system flushed and seals, hoses and filters checked for compatibility. Ask us for the maker's changeover procedure.
Approvals: Mines and steelworks often require Factory Mutual approval or the Luxembourg report listing. Tell us the requirement and we will quote a listed fluid.
