How to choose a biodegradable hydraulic oil.
A biodegradable hydraulic oil is used where a leak would reach soil or water: excavators and cranes on waterside sites, forestry machines, lock gates, dredgers, ship deck machinery and municipal equipment. The ISO 15380 classes are HETG (vegetable oil), HEES (synthetic ester) and HEPG (polyglycol); ships in US waters need a fluid that meets the Vessel General Permit as an Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant.

Picking the right grade
- Saturated synthetic ester (HEES)
- The usual choice for industrial and marine plant: good ageing stability at Gulf temperatures, a wide temperature range and a long service life. Most carry the EU Ecolabel or meet the VGP.
- Vegetable oil (HETG)
- The lowest cost, but it ages faster in heat and is best for low-temperature, short-interval use.
- Seal compatibility
- Esters swell some seal materials more than mineral oil. Check the seals and flush the system before changing over, or ask us for the maker's procedure.
- Marine
- For vessels, the fluid must be a VGP-compliant EAL. The listings below mark the grades sold as such.
