How to choose a heat transfer oil.
Heat transfer oil circulates through a closed loop between a thermal oil heater and the process it serves: asphalt tanks, chemical reactors, laminating presses, dryers, food fryers and bakery ovens. It is heated to 250 to 320 °C, so it is judged on thermal stability, resistance to cracking and low vapour pressure. Mineral grades cover most plant; synthetic grades go higher.

Picking the right grade
- Maximum film temperature
- The heater maker gives the maximum bulk and film temperature. Mineral oils serve to around 300 to 320 °C bulk; above that a synthetic aromatic fluid is needed.
- Open or closed system
- A system open to air oxidises the oil quickly and needs a lower operating temperature or a nitrogen blanket. Closed, pressurised systems get the longest oil life.
- Food plants
- Fryers, ovens and jacketed kettles specify an NSF H1 or HT1 fluid, such as FUCHS CASSIDA Fluid HTF or TotalEnergies Nevastane HTF.
- Condition monitoring
- Cracking produces light ends that lower the flash point, and oxidation raises the acid number and viscosity. Annual analysis tells you when to change the charge.
