How to choose a hydraulic oil.

Hydraulic oil transmits power in presses, injection moulding machines, cranes, excavators, lifts and every machine tool with a hydraulic circuit. It has to keep its viscosity across the operating temperature, protect pumps against wear, release air and water, and stay clean. Most grades are specified to DIN 51524 part 2 (HLP) or part 3 (HVLP) and ISO 11158, in ISO viscosity grades 32, 46 and 68.

Picking the right grade

Viscosity grade: ISO VG 46 is the common grade for industrial systems in the Gulf; VG 68 suits hot plant and high-pressure pumps, VG 32 suits cooler, high-speed or precision systems. The pump maker's manual gives the viscosity range for the pump at its operating temperature.
HLP or HVLP: HLP (DIN 51524-2) oils are the standard anti-wear hydraulic oils. HVLP (part 3) oils have a higher viscosity index and are the choice for mobile machinery and outdoor plant where the oil sees cold mornings and hot afternoons.
Zinc or zinc-free: Zinc (ZDDP) anti-wear oils are the default. Zinc-free (ashless) grades are specified for some pumps, for systems with silver or yellow-metal components, and where fine filtration or water contamination is an issue.
Fire resistance and biodegradability: Foundries, steel mills and mines near heat specify a fire-resistant fluid. Forestry, marine and waterside plant specify a biodegradable oil. Both have their own pages.
Cleanliness: Modern servo and proportional valves need the oil filtered to an ISO 4406 cleanliness level, usually 18/16/13 or better. Ask for the data sheet and keep filtration in place from the first fill.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between hydraulic oil 46 and 68?

The number is the ISO viscosity grade: the oil's kinematic viscosity in cSt at 40 °C. VG 68 is thicker and is chosen for hotter systems and higher pressures; VG 46 is the general-purpose grade for industrial plant. Use the grade the pump maker specifies for the operating temperature.

Can I use engine oil as hydraulic oil?

Some mobile equipment makers allow a 10W engine oil in hydraulics, but industrial systems are designed for a hydraulic oil to DIN 51524, which releases air and water and filters better. Use the oil the system maker specifies.
