How to choose a refrigeration compressor oil.
Refrigeration compressor oil lubricates the compressor while circulating with the refrigerant, so it must mix with the refrigerant where it should, separate where it should, and stay fluid at the evaporator temperature. That makes the refrigerant the first question: ammonia, HFC, HFO, CO2 and hydrocarbon systems each need a different oil chemistry.

Picking the right grade
- Ammonia (R717)
- Mineral naphthenic oils and hydrotreated grades such as RENISO KM, Lunaria FR and Gargoyle Arctic 300 are the standard. Synthetic PAO and alkylbenzene grades, such as RENISO SP and Lunaria SH, give lower pour points and longer life in low-temperature plant.
- HFC refrigerants (R134a, R404A, R410A)
- These need a polyolester (POE) oil, such as RENISO TRITON SE/SEZ or Planetelf ACD, because mineral oil does not mix with them.
- HFO and blends
- The newer low-GWP refrigerants also run on POE oils; several RENISO TRITON grades are listed as suitable for HFO and HFO/HFC blends.
- CO2 and hydrocarbons
- CO2 transcritical systems and propane or isobutane systems have dedicated oils. Tell us the refrigerant and the compressor maker and we will quote the approved grade.
- Viscosity
- ISO VG 32, 46 and 68 cover most compressors. Follow the compressor maker's recommendation, which depends on the refrigerant and the evaporating temperature.
