How to choose a open gear lubricant.
Open gear lubricants coat the girth gears and pinions of rotary kilns, ball mills, SAG mills, dryers and large drums. The gear is open to the air, so the lubricant must stick to the flank, carry very high loads at low speed and resist being thrown off or washed away by dust and water. Products are applied by spray system, drip or bath and range from thick fluids to graphite greases.

Picking the right grade
- Application method
- Spray systems need a pumpable grade, usually NLGI 0 to 1 or a solvent-cut fluid. Bath and drip lubrication take a high-viscosity fluid. Match the product to the lubrication system fitted to the drive.
- Running-in and priming
- New or re-cut gears run in on a special priming or running-in grade before the operating lubricant goes on. The LUBRILOG Gear Fluid R and Gearlog P and R grades are made for this.
- Graphite or clean
- Graphite and solid-additive greases give the highest load carrying but make flank inspection harder. Transparent fluids such as CEPLATTYN and Gear Fluid let the flanks be inspected while running.
- Temperature and dust
- Kiln gears run hot and dusty; mills run wet. Tell us the duty and the OEM and we will quote the grade the gear maker approves.
