How to choose a circulating oil.
Circulating oil is pumped from a central tank to the bearings and gears of large machines and back again through filters and coolers: the roll-neck bearings of a rolling mill, the dryer bearings of a paper machine, the main bearings of a crusher or extruder. It must separate water quickly, release air, resist oxidation and keep its viscosity across the ISO VG 32 to 680 range such systems use.

Picking the right grade
- Viscosity
- The machine maker gives the ISO VG for the bearing type, speed and oil temperature. Rolling mill backup bearings typically run VG 320 to 680; paper machine systems VG 150 to 320; general plant VG 68 to 220.
- Water and heat
- Mill and paper machine oils see a lot of water and heat. Choose a grade with fast demulsibility and, for paper machines, the deposit control the maker specifies.
- Plain or EP
- Plain R&O circulating oils serve bearings and lightly loaded gears. Where the system also feeds gearboxes, a CLP-type circulating oil with EP additives is specified.
- Synthetic
- PAO synthetic circulating oils extend oil life and reduce deposits at high temperature; worth considering for paper machines and hot mill drives.
