How to choose a engine coolant & antifreeze.
Engine coolant carries heat from the engine to the radiator and protects the cooling system from corrosion, scale and cavitation. In the Gulf the antifreeze part matters less than the corrosion inhibitors and the boiling point, which is why a proper coolant, not water, belongs in every engine. Most products are a monoethylene glycol concentrate diluted with distilled water, or a ready-to-use pre-mix.

Picking the right grade
- Inhibitor technology
- OAT (organic acid) coolants last longer and suit most modern engines. Hybrid (HOAT) and silicate coolants are specified by some European and Japanese makers. Do not mix technologies; the inhibitors can react and drop out.
- The OEM specification
- Coolants are approved to standards such as ASTM D3306, BS 6580, VW TL 774, MB 325.x or Cummins CES 14603. Match the one in the handbook, especially for warranty fleets and generators.
- Concentrate or pre-mix
- A concentrate must be diluted with demineralised water, usually 33 to 50 per cent. A ready-to-use coolant is mixed already. Hard tap water causes scale, so use the right water or buy pre-mix.
- Industrial and gas engines
- Stationary diesel and gas engines in power and cogeneration plants have their own coolant specifications; the TotalEnergies Coolelf CHP and Supra grades cover these.
