How to choose a dry film lubricant.
A dry film lubricant is a solid lubricant, molybdenum disulphide, graphite or PTFE, held in a resin binder and applied as a thin coating that cures to a dry, low-friction film. It lubricates where oil and grease cannot: in dust, in vacuum, at extreme temperature, under very high load at low speed, where a clean dry surface is required, or where the part is assembled once and never re-lubricated. Air-drying sprays suit maintenance; heat-curing coatings are applied in production.

Picking the right grade
- Solid lubricant
- MoS2 films carry the highest loads in air. Graphite works at higher temperatures and in humid air. PTFE gives the lowest friction at light loads and is clean and white. GLEITMO 900, 961 and 980 sprays cover the three.
- Binder and curing
- Air-drying films are convenient for maintenance and assembly aids. Heat-curing films, applied by spray or dip-spin on a coating line, are harder and last longer; the GLEITMO HMP grades are made for bulk part coating.
- Surface preparation
- A bonded film needs a clean, often phosphated or blasted surface to adhere. Thinners such as METABLANC V 901 adjust the coating for spray application.
- Fasteners
- Dry film coatings on bolts give a controlled friction coefficient for torque-tension control, which is why they are specified in automotive and wind turbine assembly.
