How to choose a food grade chain oil.
Food grade chain oil lubricates the drive and conveyor chains on bakery ovens, fryers, bottling and canning lines, proofers, freezers and packaging machines. It must penetrate the chain joints, stay on the chain through washdown or heat, and be NSF H1 registered. High-temperature oven chains need a synthetic oil that evaporates cleanly rather than carbonising.

Picking the right grade
- Temperature
- Below 120 °C a standard H1 chain oil serves. Oven and fryer chains at 200 °C and above need a high-temperature synthetic such as Castrol Optileb CH 1500 or the CASSIDA high-temperature grades.
- Washdown
- Chains hosed down daily need an adhesive, water-resistant H1 chain oil.
- Freezers
- Spiral freezers and chillers need a low-temperature synthetic that stays fluid well below zero.
- Spray or central system
- Spray cans suit manual lubrication. Chains fed by brush or drip lubricators need a pumpable viscosity.
