How to choose a moly grease.
Moly grease contains molybdenum disulphide, a solid lubricant that stays on the metal when the oil film is squeezed out by shock loads, slow oscillating motion or vibration. It is the grease for excavator and crane pins and bushes, kingpins, fifth wheels, universal joints, splines, jaw crusher toggles and any joint that moves slowly under heavy load.

Picking the right grade
- Moly content
- Three per cent MoS2 is the usual level for pins and bushes; some heavy-duty grades carry more. The product's note says what it contains.
- Not for fast bearings
- Solid lubricants can build up in fast rolling bearings. Keep moly greases for slow, heavily loaded joints and use a plain EP grease for rolling bearings unless the bearing maker specifies otherwise.
- Construction equipment
- Excavator and loader makers specify a moly EP grease for pins and bushes. Choose a grade that pumps well in central lubrication systems and resists washout.
- Pastes
- For assembly and very slow sliding parts, a MoS2 paste carries more solid lubricant than a grease; see the anti-seize page.
