How to choose a gear grease.
A gear grease lubricates enclosed gears where an oil would leak or fling off: small and sealed gearboxes, planetary and worm gear sets, geared motors, the precision reducers of industrial robots, power tool gear trains and the plastic gears of window lifters and wiper motors. Most are soft or semi-fluid greases (NLGI 00 and 000) that flow back into the gear mesh; stiffer grades are used where the grease must stay on fast-turning or small gears.

Picking the right grade
- Semi-fluid gearboxes
- Sealed gearboxes and geared motors that leak oil are often converted to a semi-fluid NLGI 00 or 000 grease, such as Multis EP 00 and 000 or Castrol Tribol GR CLS, which also serve central lubrication systems.
- Planetary gears
- Fast planetary gear sets throw grease off the teeth. Nye Rheolube 377AL is made to bond to the gear surface and stay on the planetary gears at speed, and is compatible with plastics and elastomers.
- Worm and heavily loaded gears
- Worm gears slide more than they roll and run hot. A synthetic grease such as Marson SY 00 (PAG) carries the load of worm gears and enclosed gear trains.
- Robot reducers
- RV and harmonic precision reducers on industrial robots take a grease made for them, such as LUBRILOG Starlog RB 00 M and RB 2 S. Use the grade the robot maker specifies.
- Plastic gears
- Plastic gears in actuators, window lifters and appliances need a grease that does not attack the plastic, such as LUBRILOG Plastogrease WMG 2 or Nye Rheolube grades. Check compatibility with the gear material.
