Can I use ordinary hydraulic oil in a tractor's transmission?

No. The transmission also lubricates the gears and, usually, the wet brakes, which need the friction properties of a UTTO. Plain hydraulic oil causes brake noise and wear.

What is the difference between UTTO and STOU?

A UTTO covers the transmission, hydraulics and wet brakes. A STOU also covers the engine, so it carries an engine oil API rating as well as the transmission approvals.

How to choose a tractor & off-highway oil.

Tractors, harvesters and many construction machines share one oil between the transmission, the hydraulics and the wet brakes. A UTTO (universal tractor transmission oil) serves those three systems. A STOU (super tractor oil universal) also serves the engine, so one drum covers the whole machine. Both are specified to the equipment maker's standards, such as John Deere JDM J20C, Massey Ferguson CMS M1145, Case New Holland MAT 3525 or ZF TE-ML 06.

Picking the right grade

UTTO or STOU: If the engine has its own sump, a UTTO covers transmission, hydraulics and brakes and a separate diesel engine oil goes in the engine. A STOU serves all four and simplifies stock on a mixed fleet.
Wet brakes: The oil's friction properties stop the oil-immersed brakes from chattering. A machine with wet brakes must have a UTTO or STOU that carries the maker's approval, not a plain hydraulic oil.
The maker's standard: Find the standard in the handbook. JDM J20C, Massey Ferguson, Case New Holland, Kubota, ZF and Volvo WB 101 are the common ones.
