How to choose a damping grease.
A damping grease gives a mechanism a smooth, controlled, premium feel: the slow glide of a camera lens, a car's glove box lid, a volume knob, a seat rail or a laboratory instrument slide. Its viscosity is chosen to resist motion by exactly the right amount, and it must be compatible with the plastics and elastomers most of these mechanisms are made of.

Picking the right grade
- Feel
- Light-viscosity gels give a smooth glide; heavy gels give firm, slow motion. The Nye Fluorocarbon Gel range runs from light to heavy, and the right one is usually found by trial on the mechanism.
- Plastics
- Choose a grease tested on the plastic in the mechanism; polycarbonate and ABS in particular crack with the wrong lubricant. The Nye gels are made for plastic gears and slides.
- Temperature and life
- Mechanisms in vehicles see heat, cold and years of service. Silicone and PFPE-based gels keep their feel across that range; silicone-free and low-fog grades, such as Plastogel TS 1200, are specified for vehicle interiors.
