How to choose a rail & switch lubricant.
Railways and metros lubricate the places where steel runs on steel under load: the wheel flange and rail gauge face on curves, the sliding plates of switches and turnouts, the pantograph and overhead line, and the bearings and gears of the rolling stock. The products must stay on the rail in heat and rain, not migrate to the running surface where they would affect braking, and increasingly be biodegradable because they are applied to the track.

Picking the right grade
- Wheel flange and gauge face
- Flange lubricators on the vehicle and trackside gauge-face lubricators take greases such as TRAMLUB F 234 G, made to lubricate the flange without reaching the rail head.
- Switches and slide plates
- Switch points need a lubricant that stays on the slide plates through weather and dust and lets the blade move freely; the TRAMLUB and LOCOLUB switch grades are made for this.
- Overhead line
- Pantograph strips and contact wire take a conductive or compatible lubricant such as GLEITMO RAIL PL.
- Biodegradability
- Lubricant applied to track reaches the ballast. Choose biodegradable grades where the operator requires them; RIVOLTA S.K.D. biodegradable rail switch lubricants are listed.
