How to choose a medical device lubricant.
Lubricants used inside medical devices, in syringes, inhalers, pumps, surgical instruments, connectors and wearable devices, must be inert, compatible with the plastics and elastomers of the device, stable through sterilisation and tested for biocompatibility. Fluorinated and silicone fluids are the usual choice, and the maker supplies the test data a device manufacturer needs for its regulatory file.

- Nyemed 7471 is a fully fluorinated, inert fluid with low solubility in most materials. Nyemed 7605 is a low-viscosity silicone fluid for elastomer and plastic substrates.
- Compatibility
- Test the lubricant on the device's own materials and through its sterilisation process. The maker's data sheet gives biocompatibility test results.
- Documentation
- Ask for the test reports and the regulatory documentation with the quotation, for the device file.
