How to choose a high temperature grease.
A high temperature grease keeps lubricating where a standard lithium grease dries out, runs out or bakes into varnish: fan bearings on furnaces and kilns, oven and dryer conveyors, kiln car wheels, continuous casting and hot rolling, glass lehrs and the engine bay of a vehicle in Gulf summer. The thickener and the base oil both have to withstand the temperature, and above about 200 °C only synthetic and fluorinated greases survive.

Picking the right grade
- Up to 150 °C
- Lithium complex and calcium sulphonate complex greases serve most hot plant bearings. Multis Complex and Ceran XM are examples.
- 150 to 200 °C
- Polyurea and synthetic lithium complex greases, such as Mobil SHC Polyrex and Mobiltemp SHC, run longer at these temperatures with less oxidation.
- Above 200 °C
- Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) greases, such as the FUCHS GLEITMO and LUBRILOG Fluostar fluorinated grades and Nye Uniflor, work to 250 °C and beyond and do not carbonise. Non-melting clay-thickened greases suit kiln cars and slow bearings where re-lubrication is frequent.
- Relubrication
- At high temperature the grease ages faster, so the relubrication interval matters as much as the grease. Automatic lubricators keep hot bearings fed between maintenance visits.
