How to choose a refractory & ladle coating.
Refractory coatings are applied to ladles, crucibles, launders, dies and tools that handle molten aluminium and other non-ferrous metals, so the melt does not wet or stick to the surface and the tool lasts longer. They are brushed or sprayed on and dried before use, and reapplied as the coating wears.

Picking the right grade
- Tool and metal
- Ladles, spouts, funnels and launders each take a coating made for the metal they carry and the temperature they see. The product notes say which.
- Application
- Most coatings are applied by brush or spray to a clean, preheated tool and dried before contact with the melt.
- Insulation
- Some coatings insulate as well as release, which keeps the melt temperature in a ladle; others are thin anti-wetting washes.
