What is copper anti-seize used for?

Bolts, studs, nuts and flanges exposed to heat, water or corrosion, so they can be undone later: exhaust manifolds, brake caliper slides, boiler and turbine flanges, pump casings. It works to over 1000 °C.

Should I use anti-seize on stainless steel bolts?

Yes, stainless threads gall easily and an assembly paste prevents it. Many plants prefer a metal-free paste such as GLEITMO 165 on stainless to avoid copper or nickel contamination.

Does anti-seize change bolt torque?

Yes. It lowers thread friction, so the same torque produces more clamp load. Use the torque value for lubricated threads given in the design or the paste's data sheet.

How to choose a anti-seize & assembly paste.

Anti-seize paste is applied to threads, flanges, studs, press fits and splines before assembly so they come apart again after heat, corrosion and vibration have done their work. It carries a high load of solid lubricants, copper, aluminium, nickel, MoS2, graphite or white ceramics, in a small amount of grease, so it stays put where a grease would run and keeps working at temperatures far above any grease's limit.

Picking the right grade

Copper paste: The general anti-seize for bolts, exhaust studs, brake parts and flanges up to around 1100 °C. Not for stainless steel in some chemical plant, where copper can promote corrosion, and not for aluminium threads.
Metal-free and ceramic pastes: White, metal-free pastes such as GLEITMO 165 and 155 are used on turbine bolts, stainless steel screws and in chemical and food plants where copper or nickel is unwanted. They work to very high temperature and do not promote galvanic corrosion.
MoS2 assembly paste: Pastes with molybdenum disulphide, such as GLEITMO 100 and Molub-Alloy Paste, give a low, controlled friction for press fits, splines, heavy plain bearings and the running-in of gears.
Torque: A paste changes the friction coefficient of a bolted joint, so the torque to reach the design clamp load changes. Use the torque figure for lubricated threads, or the paste maker's friction coefficient.
