How to choose a marine engine oil.
A ship's main and auxiliary engines take oils found nowhere on land. A two-stroke crosshead engine burns a cylinder oil, chosen by its base number (BN) to match the sulphur in the fuel, and runs a separate system oil in the crankcase. Four-stroke trunk piston engines on auxiliaries, ferries, tugs and workboats take a trunk piston engine oil (TPEO), also chosen by BN. Stern tubes, thrusters and deck machinery have their own oils, increasingly biodegradable EALs.

Picking the right grade
- Cylinder oil BN
- Match the base number to the fuel: a low-BN cylinder oil for 0.5 per cent sulphur VLSFO and LNG, a high-BN oil for high-sulphur fuel used with a scrubber. Running the wrong BN causes corrosion or deposits in the liner.
- Trunk piston engine oil
- Four-stroke engines on distillate take a BN 12 to 20 oil such as Disola; those on heavy fuel take BN 30 to 55 grades such as Aurelia. SAE 40 is the usual viscosity.
- System oil
- The crankcase oil of a two-stroke engine is a low-BN SAE 30 system oil such as Atlanta, kept separate from the cylinder oil.
- Stern tube and deck
- Vessels calling at US ports need VGP-compliant EALs in stern tubes, thrusters and deck machinery; these are listed under biodegradable lubricants.
- Engine maker approval
- MAN Energy Solutions, Wärtsilä and WinGD approve specific oils for each engine and fuel. Tell us the engine and fuel and we will quote an approved grade.
