What is the difference between a mineral oil release agent and a chemical release agent?

A mineral oil agent forms a physical barrier between the concrete and the form. A chemically active agent reacts with the cement to form a soap film at the interface, which gives a cleaner, stain-free face on fair-faced concrete and uses less product.

How much release agent do I need?

A thin, even film; the data sheet gives coverage in square metres per litre, typically 30 to 60 m² per litre for a sprayed agent. More is not better.

How to choose a concrete release agent.

A concrete release agent is applied to formwork and moulds so the concrete strikes cleanly, with a smooth face and no staining, and the form can be used again. Products range from ready-to-use mineral oil agents for site formwork to chemically active and emulsion agents for precast and architectural concrete, and biodegradable grades for environmentally sensitive sites. Picking the right grade

Formwork material: Steel, aluminium, timber and plastic forms each release differently. Ready-to-use agents such as RENOCAST RA 1270 and RA 1290 are listed for all common formwork types.
Finish: Fair-faced and architectural concrete needs a chemically active agent that leaves no staining or blowholes. Site formwork can use a general mineral oil agent.
Corrosion protection: Steel forms stored between pours need an agent with corrosion protection, such as RENOCAST RA 1293 and RA 2830.
Application: Spray application needs a low-viscosity agent that covers thinly; a thick film causes dusting and staining. Follow the coverage rate on the data sheet.
