How to choose a die casting release agent.
Die casting release agents are sprayed on the die between shots so the aluminium, zinc or magnesium casting ejects cleanly, and they cool and protect the die surface. Beside them sit the plunger lubricants for the shot sleeve, the mould facings and ladle coatings that stop molten metal sticking to tools, and the ejector lubricants. Together they decide casting surface, die life and cycle time.

Picking the right grade
- Alloy
- Aluminium and magnesium take water-based emulsion concentrates such as LUBRODAL AL 100/21. Zinc takes a water-free release agent such as HYKOGEEN ZN 10.
- Plunger lubricant
- Liquid plunger lubricants come graphite-free (HYKOGEEN P 550) or graphite-containing (P 770). Graphite-free keeps the casting cleaner; graphite carries more load.
- Ladles and tools
- Ladles, spouts and funnels are coated with a facing or burn-in paste, such as HYKOGEEN LS 507 and LS 50, to stop the melt sticking and to insulate.
- Dilution and spray
- Release agents are diluted 1:50 to 1:200 depending on the die temperature and spray system. Run leaner on hot, simple dies and richer on cold, complex ones.
