How to choose a forging & hot forming lubricant.
Forging and hot forming lubricants are sprayed or swabbed on the die to release the hot part, cool the die surface and keep the metal flowing into the impression. Graphite in water or oil is the traditional product for steel forging; graphite-free white and synthetic lubricants are used where cleanliness, die life or aluminium and brass forging demand it. The choice depends on the material, the die temperature and the application system.

Picking the right grade
- Water-based or oil-based
- Water-based graphite dispersions cool the die and are sprayed on automatic presses. Oil-based dispersions, such as HYKOGEEN G 30 and G 60, give more lubrication for complex parts and hammer forging.
- Graphite-free
- For a cleaner shop, lighter parts and aluminium or brass forging, graphite-free lubricants such as LUBRODAL F 53/318 are used. They need the right die temperature to work.
- Material
- Steel, aluminium and brass each have grades: GRASINOL 10 and HYKOGEEN 87/3 and MB 1000 are made for aluminium and brass respectively.
- Dilution
- Concentrates are diluted with water at the ratio the data sheet gives; the spray system and die temperature decide how lean the mix can run.
