How to choose a two-stroke oil.
Two-stroke oil is burnt with the fuel. It is either mixed into the tank at a set ratio or metered by an injection pump, and it must lubricate the crankshaft and piston on the way through while leaving as little ash and smoke as possible. The standards are JASO FC and FD and ISO-L-EGD; the fuel-to-oil ratio comes from the engine maker.

Picking the right grade
- Premix or injection
- A premix oil is mixed in the fuel tank at the ratio the engine maker gives, often 32:1 to 50:1. Oils for autolube injection systems are made to flow through the pump at low temperature. Many modern 2T oils are rated for both; check the pack.
- Mineral, semi or full synthetic
- Full synthetic ester oils, such as Silkolene PRO 2, give the cleanest burn and the best protection for race and high-performance engines. Semi-synthetic grades suit road scooters and everyday use.
- Castor-based race oils
- Castor and castor-synthetic blends, such as Silkolene Castorene, are chosen for racing engines run at full load. They are for competition use and need the engine cleaned more often.
- The JASO rating
- JASO FD is the highest level for detergency and smoke. Use at least the level the engine maker specifies.
