How to choose a passenger car engine oil.

Passenger car engine oil lubricates, cools and cleans the engine of a car, SUV or light van. The grade on the bottle has two parts: a viscosity such as 5W-30, and a performance level such as API SP or ACEA C3, plus any carmaker approval the oil carries.

Picking the right grade

Start with the handbook: The owner's manual gives the viscosity and the specification the engine was designed for. In the Gulf heat most modern engines still run the 0W-20, 5W-30 or 5W-40 the maker specifies. Going thicker than the handbook is rarely needed and can cost fuel economy.
Match the specification, not just the viscosity: Two 5W-30 oils can be very different. A diesel with a particulate filter needs a low-SAPS oil (ACEA C2, C3 or C5). A turbo petrol engine needs an oil that meets API SP or the carmaker's own approval, such as VW 504 00 / 507 00, MB 229.52 or BMW Longlife.
Full synthetic for turbo and long drain: Fully synthetic oils hold up better at the high temperatures a turbocharged engine reaches and at the long service intervals most new cars specify. Semi-synthetic and mineral grades suit older engines on shorter intervals.
Older and high-mileage engines: An engine built before 2005 often specifies 10W-40 or 15W-40 and a lower API category. The listings below include these grades too.

Which engine oil should I use in the UAE heat?

The viscosity and specification in the car's handbook. Modern engines are designed around a specific oil, often 0W-20 or 5W-30, and the W number describes cold flow, not hot protection. The second number, 30 or 40, covers the operating temperature, and a 5W-30 that meets the maker's approval protects the engine in Dubai summers.

Can I use a diesel engine oil in a petrol car?

Only if the oil carries both the petrol and the diesel specification the handbook asks for. Many heavy-duty diesel oils do not, and their additive levels are wrong for a petrol engine with a catalytic converter. Send us the car model and year and we will quote the right grade.
