How to choose a electric vehicle fluids.
Electric and hybrid vehicles still need fluids: a reduction gear or e-axle oil that is compatible with copper windings and insulation, a thermal fluid for the battery and power electronics, and greases for bearings that see electrical currents. These fluids are specified for low conductivity and material compatibility as much as for lubrication.

Picking the right grade
- E-axle and reduction gear
- The gear oil in an EV drive unit often cools the motor as well. It must be compatible with copper and insulation materials and have the right electrical properties. Use the grade the vehicle maker specifies.
- Battery thermal management
- Indirect systems use a glycol coolant to the maker's specification; immersion systems use dielectric fluids. The two are not interchangeable.
- Hybrids
- A hybrid's engine still takes a conventional engine oil, usually a low-viscosity grade such as 0W-20. The transmission takes the fluid specified for that hybrid system.
- Bearings and connectors
- Greases for EV motor bearings and dielectric greases for charging connectors are listed under greases.
