Not in a bike with a wet clutch. Car oils are formulated for fuel economy with friction modifiers that can cause clutch slip. Use an oil rated JASO MA or MA2.

What does JASO MA2 mean?

JASO MA and MA2 are Japanese standards for four-stroke motorcycle oils that share their oil with a wet clutch. MA2 is the higher friction level and is what most modern bikes specify. JASO MB is for scooters with a separate transmission.

How to choose a motorcycle engine oil.

A motorcycle engine oil does three jobs at once: it lubricates the engine, the gearbox and the wet clutch, which share the same oil in most bikes. That is why it is rated JASO MA or MA2 for clutch friction, on top of its API rating and SAE viscosity. Scooters with a separate automatic transmission take a JASO MB oil instead.

Picking the right grade

Four-stroke or two-stroke: A four-stroke road bike takes a 4T oil in the sump, typically 10W-40 or 10W-50 in the Gulf heat. A two-stroke engine takes a 2T oil that is mixed with the fuel or injected, and the two are not interchangeable.
Wet clutch: If the engine oil also lubricates the clutch, the oil must be JASO MA or MA2. Car engine oils with friction modifiers can make the clutch slip.
Road, race or scooter: Fully synthetic ester oils such as Silkolene PRO 4 are made for high-revving sports and race engines. Semi-synthetic grades such as COMP 4 suit everyday road bikes. Scooters with a CVT take a JASO MB scooter oil.
Viscosity: Use the grade in the handbook. 10W-40 covers most bikes; 10W-50, 15W-50 and 20W-50 are specified for larger air-cooled and high-performance engines and for sustained heat.
