How to choose a automotive gear oil.
Automotive gear oil lubricates manual gearboxes, differentials, axles and transfer cases. It is graded on the SAE gear scale, such as 75W-90 or 80W-90, and by API performance level: GL-4 for most manual gearboxes with synchromesh, GL-5 for hypoid differentials and heavily loaded axles. Limited-slip differentials need an LS additive.

Picking the right grade
- GL-4 or GL-5
- Use GL-4 where the handbook says GL-4. Some GL-5 oils carry extreme-pressure additives that attack the brass synchroniser rings in older manual gearboxes. A GL-4/GL-5 grade is safe for both where the maker allows it.
- Viscosity
- 75W-90 synthetic is the common choice for modern transmissions and axles, with good cold flow and stable hot viscosity. 80W-90 and 85W-140 mineral grades remain specified for older axles and heavy trucks.
- Limited slip
- A limited-slip or self-locking differential needs an oil with LS friction modifiers, such as ADNOC Gear Oil GX LS. Without it the differential chatters.
- Commercial vehicle approvals
- Truck gearboxes and axles often require ZF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo or Scania approvals. The TITAN Cytrac range carries many of these; tell us the unit and we will quote the right grade.
