How to choose a brake fluid.
Brake fluid transmits the pressure from the pedal to the calipers and must not boil, compress or corrode the system. It is graded by its dry and wet boiling points: DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1 and the racing grades above them. Glycol-based fluids absorb moisture over time, which lowers the boiling point, so the fluid is changed on a schedule rather than when it fails.

Picking the right grade
- The DOT grade
- Use the grade in the handbook or on the reservoir cap. DOT 4 covers most cars and bikes. DOT 5.1 has a higher boiling point and is specified for ABS and performance braking. DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are glycol-based and can be mixed in an emergency, but the system is best refilled with one grade.
- Silicone DOT 5
- DOT 5 is silicone-based and is not compatible with glycol fluids or with most ABS systems. Use it only where the vehicle maker specifies it.
- Racing and track use
- High-boiling-point fluids, such as the Silkolene PRO RACE grades, resist fade under repeated hard braking. They need changing more often.
- Heat
- Gulf temperatures and heavy traffic push brake temperatures up, so a fresh fluid with a high wet boiling point is worth the small extra cost.
