How to choose a rolling oil.
Rolling oils lubricate the roll bite in cold and hot rolling mills for steel, stainless, aluminium and non-ferrous strip, foil, tube and wire. They control friction so the strip reduces evenly, cool the rolls, and leave a surface that can be annealed, coated or sold bright. Steel mills generally run emulsions; aluminium foil mills run neat oils; skin pass and temper mills run light oils that also protect the strip.

Picking the right grade
- Metal and mill
- Aluminium cold rolling and foil mills run neat low-viscosity oils such as the Mobil Somentor range. Steel cold rolling runs emulsions blended from concentrates such as Prosol. Tube and welded pipe mills take dedicated grades such as Castrol Iloform RS.
- Annealing cleanliness
- Strip that is annealed after rolling needs an oil that burns off cleanly without staining. The data sheet states the annealing behaviour.
- Skin pass
- Temper and skin pass mills use a light oil that lubricates and leaves short-term corrosion protection, such as RENOFORM WO 52 B.
