How to choose a honing oil.
Honing oil carries the stones of a honing or superfinishing machine across the bore of a cylinder, hydraulic tube, bearing race or gear and flushes the fine swarf away. It is thin and clean, has to give a consistent cutting action from the stone, and must not leave a residue or stain the part. Many grades double as a light cutting oil for the same shop.

Picking the right grade
- Material
- Steel and cast iron bores take the general Honilo grades. Aluminium and non-ferrous bores need a grade that prevents discolouration, such as Honilo 989.
- Finish and stock removal
- Heavier stock removal and the bearing industry use the more active grades such as Honilo 919 and 981; micro-finishing uses the lightest oils.
- Stones
- Diamond, CBN and conventional stones each cut differently in oil. Ask us for the grade the stone maker recommends.
