How to choose a minimum quantity lubrication oil.
Minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) replaces flood coolant with a few millilitres per hour of oil, carried to the cutting edge as a fine aerosol in compressed air. There is no sump to maintain, no coolant to dispose of and dry chips to recycle. The oil has to lubricate at a very low flow, be safe to breathe in the small amounts that escape, and leave a dry, residue-free part. Most MQL fluids are synthetic or vegetable esters.

Picking the right grade
- Material
- Aluminium, steel and non-ferrous metals each have grades tuned for them: Castrol Hyspray V 1093 for aluminium and steel, Hyspray E 2000 for high-alloy steels, PLANTO MIKRO UNI for all materials.
- EP level
- Tapping, threading and difficult alloys need a high-EP MQL oil such as PLANTO MIKRO 30 HD. Sawing and light milling need less.
- System type
- Single-channel and dual-channel MQL systems atomise differently. Choose a fluid rated for the system fitted to the machine.
- Health and residue
- The fluid leaves a thin film on the part and the machine, so choose one that is low-odour, free of hazardous labelling and compatible with the next process.
