How to choose a grinding oil.
Grinding oil is a thin neat oil used on tool and cutter grinders, flute grinders, gear grinders, creep-feed and profile grinders where water-based fluid would give poor finish, short wheel life or cobalt leaching from carbide. It must cool well enough despite being an oil, flush grit away, resist misting and foaming, and have a flash point high enough for the sparks it will meet.

Picking the right grade
- Carbide tools
- Grinding tungsten carbide with water-based fluid dissolves cobalt from the binder. Grinding oils for carbide, such as Variocut G 408 and ECOCUT FT 7 WSO, are formulated to prevent it.
- Speed and wheel type
- High-speed and CBN grinding needs a thin oil with a high flash point, such as the Variocut G 600 series. Creep-feed grinding needs an oil that carries heat out of the long contact zone.
- Base oil
- GTL and hydrocracked base oils give low evaporation and mist in enclosed machines, which matters in the Gulf heat. Ester oils give the highest lubricity for gear grinding.
- Filtration
- Grinding oil is filtered fine and used for years. Choose an oil rated for the filtration system and keep it clean; the oil is a long-term investment.
