What is a copper-inactive cutting oil?

An oil whose sulphur is bound so it does not stain copper, brass or bronze. Active oils with free sulphur cut harder in steel but discolour non-ferrous metals.

Can neat cutting oil be used as a hydraulic or slideway oil?

No. Some machine tools do share one oil, but only where the maker specifies a dual-purpose grade. Cutting oils lack the anti-wear and anti-foam properties a hydraulic pump needs.

How to choose a neat cutting oil.

A neat cutting oil is used undiluted. It lubricates better than any water-based fluid, so it is chosen where the cut is slow and heavy and the tool is expensive: broaching, gear hobbing and shaping, deep-hole and gun drilling, tapping and threading, multi-spindle automatic turning, and the machining of stainless steel, titanium and nickel alloys. It is also used on machines where water would be a problem, such as Swiss-type lathes and honing machines.

Picking the right grade

Active or inactive: Active oils contain free sulphur for the hardest cuts in steel and stainless, but stain copper and brass. Inactive (copper-inactive) oils, such as the ECOCUT HFN LE grades, suit non-ferrous metals and general use.
Viscosity: Thin oils (ISO VG 5 to 15) suit high-speed automatics, grinding and small drills; medium oils (VG 15 to 32) cover general machining; heavy oils carry broaching and gear cutting.
Base oil: Mineral oils are the economical choice. Hydrocracked and GTL base oils, such as ECOCUT FT, give low mist and low evaporation in the heat. Ester oils, such as Castrol Carecut ES, give the highest lubricity and flash point.
Mist and smoke: Enclosed machines running hot cuts fill with oil mist. Choose a low-mist, low-evaporation grade and a mist extractor; the LE grades are formulated for this.
Chlorine-free: Chlorinated additives are being phased out in many plants. All the Castrol Ilocut and Variocut C grades listed are chlorine-free.
