Can I weld or paint through forming oil?

Only through an evaporating or low-residue oil designed for it. Heavy drawing oils must be washed off before welding, painting or coating.

How to choose a forming & drawing oil.

Forming and drawing oils lubricate the die and the sheet, wire or tube as it is stamped, blanked, deep drawn, fine blanked, drawn or cold rolled. The lubricant stops the metal welding to the tool, controls friction so the part forms without tearing or wrinkling, and protects the finished part until it is cleaned or welded. Products range from thin evaporating oils for light blanking to heavy chlorine-free oils and pastes for deep drawing stainless steel.

Picking the right grade

Severity: Light blanking and bending take a thin oil or a pre-lube. Deep drawing and fine blanking of thick or stainless material take a heavy EP oil, such as Castrol Iloform CFX or FST and the heavier RENOFORM grades. The sheet thickness and material in the product notes are the guide.
What happens next: If the part is welded or painted without washing, choose an evaporating or low-residue oil. If it goes through a wash line, a heavier oil is fine and the cleaner should be chosen with it.
Chlorine-free: Chlorinated paraffins are restricted in many markets. The Iloform and RENOFORM grades listed include chlorine-free oils for heavy forming.
Wire and tube drawing: Wire drawing takes dedicated oils and soaps by material and die type; the Iloform BWN grades cover stainless wire. Tube drawing and rolling of welded pipe have their own grades.
