What is NLGI 2 grease?

NLGI 2 is the consistency grade of most general-purpose greases, about the stiffness of peanut butter. The NLGI number says only how stiff the grease is, not its thickener, base oil or temperature range.

Can different greases be mixed?

Only if the thickeners are compatible. Lithium and lithium complex usually mix; polyurea, clay and some calcium greases often do not, and the mixture can soften and run out. When changing type, purge the old grease through the bearing.

Which grease for electric motor bearings?

A polyurea or lithium complex grease with a low base oil viscosity, made for high-speed bearings; Mobil Polyrex EM is the classic example. Send us the motor and bearing details and we will quote the equivalent.

How to choose a industrial grease.

Grease is an oil held in a thickener, so it stays in the bearing, seals out water and dust, and lubricates where oil would run out. The thickener (lithium, lithium complex, calcium sulphonate, polyurea, aluminium complex, clay) sets the temperature range, water resistance and mechanical stability; the base oil viscosity sets the load and speed it suits; the NLGI grade (000 to 3) sets how stiff it is.

Picking the right grade

Thickener: Lithium and lithium complex greases are the all-round choice for plant bearings up to around 140 °C. Calcium sulphonate complex greases resist water and carry heavy loads, which suits steel, cement and marine plant. Polyurea greases run quietly and long in electric motors. Aluminium complex suits food and water-washed areas.
Base oil viscosity: Slow, heavily loaded bearings need a high base oil viscosity (ISO VG 320 to 1500); fast bearings and electric motors need a low one (VG 100 or below). Two NLGI 2 greases can have very different base oils, so check the data sheet.
NLGI grade: NLGI 2 is the standard for grease guns and most bearings. NLGI 1 and 0 suit central lubrication systems and cold conditions; NLGI 00 and 000 are semi-fluid greases for gearboxes and lubrication systems; NLGI 3 is used for vertical shafts and sealed bearings.
Temperature: In the Gulf the question is usually heat. For bearings running above 120 °C, choose a lithium complex, polyurea or synthetic grease made for it; see the high-temperature grease page.
Compatibility: Not all thickeners mix. Changing grease type means purging the bearing. Tell us the grease in use and we will confirm the equivalent and whether a purge is needed.
