How to choose a food grade gear oil.
Food grade gear oil is an NSF H1 oil for the gearboxes and reducers that drive conveyors, mixers, agitators, ovens, bottling lines and packaging machines. It carries the extreme-pressure protection a gear oil needs, from ingredients registered for incidental contact. Synthetic PAO and PAG grades are common because many food plant gearboxes run hot or are hard to reach.

Picking the right grade
- Viscosity
- ISO VG 220 and 320 are the usual grades for reducers on food lines; VG 100 to 150 for faster units, VG 460 for slow, heavily loaded ones. Follow the gearbox maker's plate.
- Worm gears and ovens
- Worm gears and hot oven drives do best on a PAG synthetic such as Nevastane SY, which also serves high-temperature oven chains. PAG oils must not be mixed with mineral or PAO oils.
- Multi-purpose
- Oils such as Nevastane EP and XSH and CASSIDA Fluid GL serve gears, plain and roller bearings and chains from the same drum, which simplifies stock.
